Narcolepsy

What is Narcolepsy?

Narcolepsy is a lifelong sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and sudden, involuntary attacks of sleep that often make it difficult to stay awake for long periods of time regardless of the circumstances. Narcolepsy comes in two types, distinguished by the presence (type 1) or absence (type 2) of cataplexy. In addition to EDS and cataplexy, sleep paralysis and hallucinations are typical symptoms of narcolepsy, however these last two only affect 10%-25% of people with narcolepsy.

Insomnia

What is Insomnia?

Insomnia may simply be the complaint that sleep is “unsatisfactory”. Strictly speaking, the criteria for insomnia are: (1) trouble falling asleep, (2) waking up during the night, and (3) waking up too early in the morning and then being unable to fall back asleep. About one-third of the general population reports one or more of these symptoms. More strict definition of insomnia considers the frequency of symptom occurrence, the timeline of symptoms, and their effect on daily functioning.
